Ice Maker Not Working — Diagnosis & Repair Hartbeespoort
Nothing happens at all — no hum, no cycle, no ice. Here's what that means, what you can check, and when to call us.
"Not working" is different from "not making ice". Here the machine is effectively dead — no compressor hum, no fan, no cycle, no response. It might be a dedicated ice machine that's gone completely quiet, or a fridge ice maker that's stopped alongside the fridge itself. When an ice maker does nothing at all, the fault is usually upstream of the ice production cycle: power, control, or the ice-maker assembly itself.
Possible causes
- No power — tripped breaker, blown fuse, faulty outlet, or a damaged power cord.
- Control board failure — the machine's board has failed or is stuck in a fault state.
- Failed ice-maker assembly — on a fridge, the ice-maker module itself (motor, heater, switch) has died.
- Compressor or start component failure — on a dedicated machine, the compressor won't start; the fan may run but no cooling occurs.
- Tripped safety — a high-pressure or thermal cut-out has opened and needs a reset or indicates an underlying fault.
Components involved
Power supply and cord, control board, ice-maker assembly (on a fridge), compressor and start relay/ capacitor, and any safety cut-outs. When an ice maker is fully dead, the diagnosis runs the opposite direction to "not making ice" — we start at power and control, not water. See our diagnostics page for the full sequence.
What you can safely check
- Confirm the machine is plugged in and the outlet has power (try another appliance in the same socket).
- Check the breaker or fuse for the circuit.
- Look for a visible on/off or clean switch that may have been knocked.
- For a fridge ice maker, confirm the fridge itself is running — if the fridge is off too, the fault is shared.
- Check for a reset button on the ice-maker assembly (some models have one).
When to call a professional
If power is confirmed at the outlet and the machine still does nothing, the fault is internal — a control board, ice-maker assembly, or compressor-side component — and these require live electrical testing to diagnose safely. Call 084 690 1545. For brand-specific help, see Samsung or LG.
