Water sits in the bin instead of draining away, the ice looks wet or cloudy, or water overflows the drain pan and runs onto the floor. On a machine with a drain pump, you may hear the pump run continuously without emptying. A blocked drain is more than a nuisance — standing water in a bin is a food-safety problem for venues, and it often leads to the "leaking water" call a few days later.

Possible causes

• Blocked drain hose — the most common cause; a kink, a dip in the hose, or a blockage of slime and ice.
• Algae and biofilm — slime builds in the warm drain path and chokes it over time. See cleaning.
• Failed drain pump — on machines with a pump, the pump has failed or is air-locked.
• Frozen drain — the drain has iced up, often because the machine is running too cold or the drain heater has failed.

Drain hose, drain fitting, drain pump (where fitted), bin floor and drain opening, and any drain heater. Most "not draining" faults are in the hose or the pump — a blockage or a failed pump — and are straightforward to resolve once the cause is confirmed.

What you can safely check

• Check the drain hose for kinks or a low spot where water and slime collect.
• Confirm the hose has a continuous fall to the drain (no uphill section).
• If there's a visible drain screen in the bin, check it isn't blocked.
• Don't poke wire into a frozen drain — you can puncture the line. Let it thaw or call us.
